Joe Montana Pays $7.4M for Waterfront Retreat in Malibu

Legendary quarterback Joe Montana is the new owner of a beach house in Malibu. The football star paid $7.35 million for the unassuming 1950-built cottage, according to Dirt. It contains two bedrooms and two baths across 1,382 sq. ft. of interior living space.

Kudos to Montana for focusing on the setting, but the rest of the story likely includes a future razing and rebuilding. The cottage itself has much to commend it, and a sensitive renovation that worked toward an idealized version of its build era would make it a modest charmer of the most beguiling variety.

The views from the home’s deck are enticing—the pier is just a hop, skip and a jump from the lot, and the coastline meanders dreamily before reaching its visual termini. Sliding glass doors connect the open-concept living area with the outdoor space. Floors are finished in tile and hardwood, although a fair amount of carpet in the home surely hides more of the good oak plank that can be spotted elsewhere.

As Montana closed on this property, he may well have been considering his other current real estate task at hand: the lavish, 500-acre, custom-built estate in Calistoga that he’s been trying to sell for about a decade, and which is currently on the market for $24.5 million.
