Anne Hathaway listed her pied-a-terre apartment on Manhattan’s West Side this winter. The actor purchased the penthouse unit in 2016, and embarked on a substantial renovation. As it now stands, the 1,200 square-foot apartment is contemporary, urbane, and quite warm, if a little glossy in its engineered balance of past and present sensibilities.

The building dates to 1902, and has five stories. Its façade is neo-Georgian, with many period details. The penthouse’s many previous renovations had bleached its character somewhat, making the renovation under Hathaway’s tenure of ownership a bit of a restoration.

The living room features a marble fireplace as a centerpiece, and the room offered access to the terrace with a large set of glass doors. Herringbone pattern oak floors, new French casement windows, and a very contemporary kitchen with concealed cabinetry, a 30-inch cooking range, floating shelves, an ornamental ladder, and a skylight are other features of the unit.

The unit’s master suite is situated privately in one end of the apartment. The bedroom—one of two in the unit—features electric shades, and the suite boasts a walk-in closet and a new bath with a slab stone shower.

Hathaway took home an Oscar for her role in Les Miserables; her upcoming feature roles include a leading part in The Last Thing He Wanted, adapted from a novel by Joan Didion.
