About six months after putting his Las Flores Beach residence up for rent at $15K/month, actor Edward Norton has decided to abandon the half measures. He’s all in for a sale, and asking $5.25 million for the property. According to public records, the home last closed in 2008, when it fetched $2.8 million.

The mid-century artist’s cottage is in fact a double-suite, with discrete upper- and lower-floor units.

It has been renovated, but sensitively. Its rustic insouciance has been retained, and is most evident in the lower level, where raw wood defines the apartment. The lower unit is the more compact, with a single bedroom and bath. But the timber ceilings, walls, cabinetry and plank floors—and the mid-century pot-bellied stove on the raised hearth—bring coziness to the space, and a fine sense of identity that reaches backward without coming off as stiff or pretentious. French doors opening to the beachfront deck liberate the little bedroom.

The upper level is bright, with a pair of bedrooms, a whitewashed brick fireplace, and a galley kitchen. Like the lower level, there’s a lot of glass to give the place a firm sense of context: the beachfront views are, of course, timeless.

Norton’s work includes the titular role in ‘The Illusionist.’ He voice-acted in ‘Isle of Dogs’; the film, directed by Wes Anderson, is slated for wide release this month.
