Five-octave diva and restless renter Mariah Carey has moved once again, this time to a slightly more than 10,300 square foot rental home in Beverly Hills which is, reportedly, owned by a member of the Saudi royal family. Carey is parting with $35K/month to come home to the Beverly Hills quasi-Mediterranean each day.

With nine bedrooms and ten baths, and a total of 12,000 square feet of living space including guest or staff accommodations, the villa is generously proportioned. It dates to 2008.

The exterior of the home is a little clunky, bearing all the earmarks of an overgrown suburban residence with palatial aspirations. A little grandiose, then, with the occasional hat-tipping to period detail; the staircase with solid baluster that hugs the exterior of the turreted foyer is a good example. The double-height foyer is crowned with a segmented, frescoed ceiling. It’s a pretty overt statement that begins the home and nearly sets the tone, but for the more contemporary elements further within.

There’s a lot of marble, there are a few pleasing flourishes of craftsmanship, the sense of proportion is excellent, and the plank floors are just the right touch to add some fundamental texture and warmth.

The property extends to just over 1.5 acres, and this is where it shines. Rolling lawns, solid views of the city, and privacy-oriented landscaping give the home the feeling of escape accomplished one thinks of as quintessentially Beverly Hills.

Carey’s screen performances last year include ‘Girls Trip’; the smartly written film was a hit.
