Mel Gibson’s Costa Rican Getaway Hits the Market Again, Asking $29.8M

Mel Gibson’s 500-acre beachfront getaway in Costa Rica is back on the market, and this time around it is priced at $29.75 million. The Aussie superstar has had the property on and off the market for about seven years. He purchased it in 2007 for $25.8 million, and had initially listed it, with a price of $35 million, in 2010. Listings since that time have hovered around the just under $30 million mark.

Although the property—which is called Playa Barrigona—has been languishing in real-estate limbo for years, Gibson is understandably reticent to sell at a loss. The actor and director is apparently determined to wait out the market. But coastal real estate acquisition in the region is a tricky proposition at this point in history.

But, for a buyer willing to take the plunge, the private, three-residence study in escapism is a spectacular opportunity. Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, a particularly unspoiled region of the country’s Pacific coast, its secretive atmosphere and emphasis on natural landscape are remarkably beautiful, even for Costa Rica.

The trio of villas is situated discreetly apart from each other on a hilltop, and each residence offers ocean views. The homes are rendered in a pleasing blend of terra-cotta and wood tones, which provides a striking contrast to the lush green of the landscape.

The property’s three homes break down as a seven bedroom, eight bath main house, and a pair of two-bedroom guest houses. All houses are entirely self-sufficient, and all have their own pools. One of the guest villas includes a small poolside cottage, and there is a Balinese dining pavilion with a catering kitchen for entertaining.

Gibson’s next film appearance will be in the upcoming ‘The Professor and the Madman’; the film was also co-produced by Gibson, and co-stars Sean Penn. Writer and director John Boorman co-wrote the screenplay.
