Sculptor and woodworker Jonah Meyer has continued a tradition of using age-old techniques to craft his modern furniture for his company Sawkille Co.

Meyer is a Pennsylvania native and draws upon his upbringing from his parents, a goldsmith and a potter, and from his training at the Rhode Island School of Design to create the Sawkille Co. furniture range.

Items in the Sawkille line include updated twists on classics like Windsor chairs, a collection of sanded and stained tree trunks that he calls Stumps, Shaker benches, and spindle-leg stools.

While the line offers a minimalistic take, the approach to the designs should not be confused as simple.

“I do a lot of drawing and prototyping,” Meyer explained. “The details start to emerge as the piece comes together and most often the piece will have a few generations of development over time before the design feels completed.”

While the furniture range from Sawkille Co. boasts a classic American farmhouse aesthetic, Meyer uses more modern shapes, paint, and inlays, and graphics to turn the pieces into functional artwork.

Materials for the Sawkille Co. line include black walnut, sycamore, tiger maple, birch bark, leather, steel, and even marble.
