Oscar-Winning ‘American Beauty’ Screenwriter Alan Ball Clears $7.1M for Hollywood Hills Home

It looks as though Alan Ball has at long last sold his charming Hollywood Hills craftsman-style home. Initially listed about fifteen months ago with an asking price of nearly $8.5 million, the property had seen a price cut in March of this year. Ball accepted an offer of $7.12 million for the house; it had been listed at $7.45 million prior to the sale.

The property comes to about an acre, and incorporates a guest house and dance studio and gym within the sylvan, tree-dotted grounds. All told, the living space comes to about 6,000 square feet, and there are six bedrooms and six baths throughout.

The main residence features a lovely exterior of what appears to be redwood, offset with dark green trim, making for a first impression which suggests a bygone era, and a taste for the understated and urbane side of rustic.

The home’s layout is rambling, making the interior spaces exude charm. Stacked stone details, open-trussed or concept raw wood ceilings, and hardwood floors enhance the atmosphere. Build-ins, mission-style light fixtures, and a main fireplace in stacked stone—as well as a master fireplace with a tile surround—also help to sustain the mood of a mid-coast or Northern California cottage. A few modern design elements keep things up-to-date, and offer a nice balancing influence.

The house features a home cinema and a library; there is a pool and spa on the property, as well as an aviary which was, by many accounts, a primary reason why the home went on the market: neighbor Quentin Tarantino took Ball and his partner, actor Peter Macdissi, to legal task over the squawking.

Ball took an Oscar home in 1999 for his screenplay for Sam Mendes’ film ‘American Beauty’; his credits also include the creation of the HBO series ‘Six Feet Under,’ an acclaimed and influential series which helped usher in the so-called ‘television renaissance.’
