After finding success with the McLaren Sports Series, Rob Melville has been named the new Director of Design for the British supercar manufacturer.

Melville, who also oversaw the second generation of the Super Series beginning with the introduction of the 720S, will be responsible for the overall design strategies and philosophy of McLaren automobiles. He will work directly with the engineers and assembly line crew to make sure the brand’s vision becomes a reality.

The new man in charge will spearhead McLaren’s Track 22 program, which plans 14 new models before 2022. Melville previously worked at Jaguar/Land Rover, including feature work on the Evoque. He also spent time at Cadillac, too, where he worked on the Converj concept.

Melville takes over for Frank Stephenson, who left McLaren after spending a decade designing cars for the Woking-based company. Stephenson will head back to join the team at Mini, one of his previous employers.

“I am thrilled to be given the title of Design Director for McLaren Automotive,” Melville said in the company’s press release. “I remember when I got the call to come and join McLaren back in 2009 and the joy I felt then is the same today. We have developed a fantastic design team and have integrated a design philosophy that I feel passionately about. I have always believed that great design tells a great story and that is what we do here at McLaren. I’m incredibly proud.”
