Filling in the compact sports sedan offerings of its model catalog, and linking the M240i and M2 more acutely, BMW has brought the M240i M Performance Edition into the open. The car offers a very good survey of top-flight driverly appeal at a very reasonable price, and has been dressed up with M-series parts and flourishes.

The M240i replaces the M235i of years past, and keeps the fundamentals mainly intact: a turbocharged 3.0L I6 engine that produces 335 horsepower, a negligible difference over the M235i’s 333; the standard gearbox is again the 8-speed auto, with a 6-speed manual still (nicely) offered as an option. The electronically-limited top speed on the M240i, though, is 155MPH, a nearly 20 mile-per-hour boost over the M235i.

Things align from there, and progress. The M240i M Performance Edition brings the M240i even closer to the M2, and that’s where the story gets more interesting. The M Performance Edition of the model brings the horsepower up to 340, and adds M Performance TwinPower Turbo Technology, helping it along to a 0-62 time of 4.4 seconds.

And, the car gets a good dose of carbon fiber to help bring it up to speed, as well as black details contrast dramatically with the Alpine White paint. A carbon fiber rear spoiler, and new air guides, radiator grille, front splitter, and rear diffuser add performance and looks. 19” light alloy wheels distinguish the M Performance Edition as well. Carbon fiber tailpipe trim, mirror caps and side sill attachments round out the racetrack aesthetic.

The M240i M Performance Edition coupe will be limited to 750 examples. The car will be available in July.
