Italdesign Offers a Peek at their Forthcoming 205-MPH Supercar

Automobile designing company Italdesign Giugiaro has revealed the supercar designed by its ‘Automobili Speciali’ division. The company—formerly an independent design company who quietly assisted in high-end performance designs of BMW and Volkswagen models—was acquired by Volkswagen Group’s Audi and Lamborghini in separate transactions dating to 2010 and 2015. The vehicle will debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, in March.

Only five examples of the model are to be built. Italdesign has a very specific buyer in mind: a collector interested in the most unique, low production, uber-engineered street-legal cars available.

Italdesign’s supercar should not disappoint that buyer. The engine—the same used in the Audi R8—is the product of Italdesign’s decades as a specialist in the field: a 5.2L naturally-aspirated V10 which will smoothly propel the car from standstill to 62 in 3.2 seconds.

If it looks a little like the Lamborghini Huracan, that’s not surprising. Lamborghini and Italdesign collaborated to some degree on the car—although the Italdesign vehicle looks as though it spent an incredible amount of time in R&D. The car is designed to make an indelible impression, and launch the company firmly into the collective consciousness of the supercar-savvy.

The carbon fiber shell borrows from the best of grand tourer and racing designs. The car’s active aerodynamics are striking: a dramatic diffuser, dive planes, splitters and louvered air vents keep the lightweight aluminum and carbon design tight and solid. A good thing, as the car’s top speed is claimed to be in excess of 205MPH.

The five examples of Italdesign’s supercar are each expected to sell at $1.6 million. Italdesign has other model designs in the pipe, and expects to release a new supercar every one-and-a-half to two years.
