Minneapolis Mansion From ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Could Be Yours for $1.7M

Although you might not recognize it, the upper floor of this house was used for the external shot of Mary Richards’ apartment in the Mary Tyler Moore show. The apartment, of course, was a studio set. Now, the Minneapolis residence—known as the Kenwood Parkway house—that provided the entry into the show each week is for sale for $1.7 million. It’s been on and off the market for about five years.

A 1900 build, in the Victorian style, the home incorporates rusticated stone and a turret into its design, and the interior craftsmanship has remained unaltered; on the first floor, narrow plank oak floors are accented with what appears to be walnut, most notably in the front hall. The main staircase is paneled in mahogany, and features a carved, offset newel. Individual fireplaces in marble, granite or limestone, exposed beams, and pocket doors give the home a substantial, historic appeal, and an enclosed porch arches around the façade, rimmed in stone, and floored in tile.

Other features of the home include music room, renovated kitchen, and large, labyrinthine finished basement. There is a third-floor balcony—which provided the zoom-shot entry into each episode of the program, until Ms. Richards moved uptown—and a third-floor deck. A backyard patio offers a little room to relax in warmer weather—in Minneapolis, that’s the last two weeks of July, and the first two in August.

Mary Tyler Moore, who died last week at the age of 80, also starred in ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show,’ and acted on film and on stage. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role as chilly mom Beth Jarrett in the Robert Redford-directed adaptation of ‘Ordinary People,’ a refreshing break from her established screen persona.
