Priced considerably below their Sprinter camper vans, Mercedes’ compact Marco Polo series offers road-trippers easy escape for a pretty small investment. The new Horizon model Marco Polo continues the trend, with a few more bells and whistles, and a design to complement more pragmatic use.

Not surprisingly for the camper van marketed toward the small family, the upgraded features concern safety, communication, and comfort—in that order. Top of the list is the addition of Mercedes’ Distronic Plus system, which automatically adjusts cruise control to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and also sends a warning to allow for response time in case of possible rear-end collision; a nice addition for family driving. Next up is a multi-function steering wheel with integrated trip computer and Mercedes’ Me connectivity service, which places navigation, live traffic information and smartphone connectivity at the driver’s fingertips.

The Horizon is designed for everyday driving, and travels which will occasionally make use of external accommodations; while the Marco Polo offers a kitchenette and closet space to owners while sacrificing berthing, the Horizon eliminates these amenities in favor of increased sleeping and passenger space. With room for eight on the road and five at the campsite, the Horizon is intended to be not limited to vacation time, offering everyday practicality not available in other Mercedes camper vans. Additionally, buyers will be able to choose from several seating layout options that maximize either passenger room or spaciousness, or strike a balance between the two; the rear seats are easily removable for custom tailoring.

There is, of course, a pop-out roof that allows headroom for the 6.7’x3.7’ bed, designed for two people. The rear seats fold down for a second bed. Available options include auxiliary heating for hot water, and a fold-away table. Horizon drive trains include any one of a number of V-Class diesel engines, and a 7-speed automatic transmission; AWD is available.

The Marco Polo Horizon starts at around $55K.
