There are all sorts of ways to charge a smartphone nowadays. Extra battery packs, solar panel chargers, and even built-in rechargeable cases dominate a market of chargers that don’t need to be plugged into an outlet.

Enter Ampware, an iPhone case that makes sure your phone is charged anywhere, anytime and that it never runs out of power because that power is actually created by you.

Ampware’s creator Mark Gabriel was without power when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. To keep informed, Gabriel used a hand-crank radio, and after a couple days when his cell phone ran out of juice, he came up with the idea of building a hand-crank charger.

Ampware looks like any other iPhone case. Crafted from a tough polycarbonate, the foldout hand crank and a stand is tucked away on the back of the case. Owners of the Ampware case simply pop out the crank and can get around an hour of charge time with roughly five minutes of spinning the crank around.

The hand-powered charging case features a standard eight-pin lightning cable charging connection and can generate up to 1,000 mAh of power.

Ampware comes in two color options, Shadow and Sport, and sells for $89.
