Jeff Bezos Spending $80M on Fifth Avenue Triplex and Pair of Condos Below

Jeff Bezos is on a bit of a real-estate spending spree these days. Two years ago, the Amazon CEO and billionaire shelled out $23 million for a 27,000 square-foot residence in D.C.’s upscale Kalorama neighborhood; that property, the largest residence in Washington, is comprised of two connected mansions.

Bezos’ new residence measures in at 17,000 square feet. It’s the penthouse of a flashy new take on a prewar building on 5th Ave., but the $80 million also includes the next two units down, making the purchase a bona-fide compound in the sky—a mansion with guest and staff quarters below.

The 24-story building dates to 1912, and was designed in the neo-gothic style. It was converted to 48 luxury condo units. The ambitious project to convert this one-time manufacturing warehouse was finished last year.

The three-floor residence called the ‘Crown Penthouse’ was initially listed with the sanguine asking price of $68.5 million; after being completed, the price went up about five mil. The listing price before the sale, according to public records, was $58 million.

The 10,000 square-foot triplex features herringbone hardwood floors and an understated, warm-side-of-neutral treatment that allows the location and the history of the building a significant voice, especially by way of the marvelous windows. It’s contemporary otherwise, with a luxurious living style that favors long, strident lines, a lack of ornament, and the occasional deco evocation.

The master suite is a deusey. Seven rooms in all, including two large bedrooms. Terrace space outside the bedroom is generous, but bear in mind that there’s 5,000 square feet of exterior living space for this mansion in the sky.
