‘Quantum of Solace’ Director Marc Forster Seeking $12.7M for Neutra in Santa Monica

The heavyweight Los Angeles-area early modern of feature director Marc Forster is back on the market this winter with a reduced asking price of $12.695 million.

The house was designed by legendary modernist Richard Neutra, and it’s a larger home for a Neutra; it has five bedrooms and six baths to its credit, distributed along 4,300 sq. ft. and two levels. As a tour of prewar modern design, it’s a knockout; its rooms are endlessly surprising, with expanses of glass constituting a greater amount of the exterior wall area, and a bit of Streamline curvature here and there.

Exceptional spaces and details make for a long list; among them is the curved, glassy breakfast room, the paneling, the original built-in bookshelves and storage, the staircase—an optimistic mode of transition if ever there was, inhabiting as it does a two-level well with steel-framed glass panes from top to bottom—and the terrazzo in the kitchen.

Outside, decades of old-growth landscaping place the home’s context firmly in the natural kingdom, establishing that lilting balance between human engineering and cheering green wildness that is one of the hallmarks of the style.
