Tom Petty’s Malibu Beach House on the Market for $9.9M

The Malibu waterfront retreat of late pop star Tom Petty is up for sale as 2022 comes to a close. The cozy waterfront cottage contains three bedrooms and three baths in a rambling layout, and sits on a prime .38-acre spot overlooking Escondido Beach. It is currently priced at $9.85 million.

The shingled long-form structure dates to 1950, and faces the Pacific in broadside fashion. Inside the home, details include pine plank floors and walls throughout. The shared spaces culminate in an open living area with an original red brick accent wall as a divider between kitchen and living room; a vaulted ceiling — with one half painted white — and a bank of sliding glass doors opening beachward are additional features of this primary living space.

Other highlights of the property: the home’s great room, which features an open-trussed ceiling, and is presently purposed as a music studio. Outside: a street-level red brick patio, which is protected from prying eyes by a formidable privacy hedge, and a deck overlooking the water.

The property is the latest of Petty’s California residences to hit the market since his untimely death in 2017. Characters all, the homes owned by the late individualist are remarkable.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers closed out their career on a high note; their final studio album, 2014’s Hypnotic Eye, was their only release to top the Billboard 200 chart. They came mighty close on two previous occasions; 1979’s Damn the Torpedoes and 2010’s Mojo both peaked at number two. Tom Petty also released a trio of solo albums along the way, and they all landed in the Top 5. They include timeless hits “I Won’t Back Down” and “Free Fallin’.”
