Audi is keeping its top-tier A8 competitive for the new model year by increasing the bells and whistles — and trimming the price of the flagship in the lineup, the S8.

The greater showroom appeal comes at a cost, but a negligible one: Audi has whittled away the trims that don’t sell. The company has also reduced the engine options, and for 2022 buyers will be confined to to the 3.0L six turbo and 4.0L eight biturbo; entry-level power in the lineup comes in at 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with the S8 giving drivers 563 HP and 590 lb-ft to play with. Gone are the PHEV hybrid and the more economical V8 option.

Upgrades to the lineup include the S-Line performance component package, which now is standard fare for the A8. The S8’s looks are made more conspicuously discrete, showing off the flagship status for buyers who shell out with a bigger grille, 20-inch wheels, and a quartet of tailpipes. New colors for the lineup include Ultra Blue, Floret Silver and Terra Gray.

But buyers won’t have to shell out quite so much this year; the S8’s base sticker has dropped by about 10%, and stands at $117,995 all in for 2022. The entry-level L55 A8 can be had for $86,595 without additional frills.
