Ferrari’s newest grand tourer was revealed last month to much acclaim. The designers at the Prancing Horse have always had a gift for artfully reconciling tradition and the need to break new ground, but the lines of the new model—called the Roma, which links it with the heart of Italy—are unusually graceful even for Ferrari.

At the time of the unveiling, only the essential power numbers were revealed: the Roma is powered by a 3.9L V8 that can produce up to 612 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. Ferrari’s new eight-speed DCT gearbox—first employed in the SF90 Stradale—delivers the goods. The Roma can get to 60 MPH in 3.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of over 200 MPH.

New details about the model were released this week, though. According to Ferrari, 70% of the components used to build a Roma are new. The design sensibility is purist, and superfluous elements have been eschewed in favor of power-to-weight; aesthetics through performance, perhaps, resulting in a beautiful abstraction.

One of the Roma’s more fascinating features is the mobile spoiler, which is integrated into the rear screen when not in use. When speed demands it, the spoiler automatically deploys to improve downforce. The design is remarkably elegant.

The newest iteration of Side-Slip Control and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer in the Race mode are other notable performance features of the Roma. The cabin is designed to engage the passenger as acutely as possible, and also to be very comfortable on the extended jaunts a GT is made for. The instrument cluster is digital, and the seats are upholstered in Frau leather and Alcantara.

Ferrari still hasn’t revealed pricing information for the Roma, though. Look for it in the spring of the coming year.
