This month, Volvo let the world have a look at the new X-Series trailblazer: the XC40 Recharge. The EV is spearheading Volvo’s transition to a hybrid and fully electric lineup, and will enter production at around the same time as its cousin, the Polestar 2.

The first Volvo SUEV will be followed by four more; the company will entirely phase out ICE-only by 2025, dividing regular production equally between full-EV and hybrid vehicles. As the first in the series, the XC40 is a good tier to begin with: reasonably priced, and possessed of a chiseled, contemporary warrior design language that should help it sell to young families who know the difference between global heating and political hot air.

But the XC40 Recharge is as notable for its impressive power as it is for its tough-as-nails garb. The two motors that comprise its kinetic fundamentals collectively pump out 402 horsepower. Recharging can be accomplished in 40 minutes, to 80% capacity, and Volvo currently details the range as at least 200 miles.

Inside the cabin, the new EV Volvo receives an Android-based infotainment system. As of now, all upcoming Volvo and Polestar EVs and hybrids will feature it.

Pricing for the U.S. is forthcoming, but deliveries are scheduled for the end of next year. And Volvo is sweetening the deal a little for buyers: a years’ worth of recharge rebates is currently being offered.
