Cheryl Tiegs Lists Balinese-Inspired Home in Bel Air for $18.5M

Cheryl Tiegs listed her longtime home in Bel Air this month. The model and pinup girl is asking $18.5 million for the Balinese-inspired ranch home.

The house dates to 1951; if you’re thinking that the Balinese-style ranch was not a common choice for homeowners in 1951, you’re right on the money. Tiegs had the home—a larger example of a SoCal midcentury ranch, and a more luxurious one, in keeping with its street address—completely overhauled to give it the stylized feel it has today.

The great room is the heart of the 4,770 square-footer. With woven wallcovering enhancing the drama of its peaked ceiling, stenciled support posts, fireplace, and walls of glass, the conceit is carried off with élan; it’s very convincing, and establishes a unique living style that feels entirely escapist…with downtown L.A. views outside the glass walls as a polestar. A kitchen with a tin ceiling and a dining room with exposed beams and unusual pendant light fixtures are other gems.

There are four bedrooms and 4.5 baths in the home, and for the most part they keep the illusion strongly alive, although the concept degenerates to a more generally Asian-inspired American fashion. The master features pattern wall covering, a return of the woven covering for the ceiling, built-ins, slatted doors, a large walk-in closet accented with dark wood, and a large master bath with a step-up soaking tub.

The lot extends to nearly 1.5 acres, and is very green. Palms, tropical gardens, lawns, a fountain water feature, and a kidney pool enhance the private and meditative living style of the property.
