An All-Electric Mini Cooper Concept Is Coming to Frankfurt

While we’ve known Mini was working on an all-electric vehicle for some time, it looks like fans will finally get a sneak peek at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The British automaker is offering a glimpse at its much-anticipated project ahead of schedule since production of the model isn’t planned to start until 2019. At Frankfurt they hope to test the waters, and assess reaction to the concept.

This isn’t the company’s first foray into electric vehicles. Mini tested a number of electric prototypes in 2008. When parent company BMW later introduced its i3, funding was presumably reduced, and Mini’s EV went to the back burner.

However, an all-electric, lithium-ion battery run Mini is sure to make up for the long waiting period.

While little is known yet about the Mini Electric Concept, the vehicle’s compact, low-to-the-ground build makes its platform an ideal candidate for an all-electric, making the progression from ICE to lithium-ion battery power a logical conclusion for the company. Marketed well, an EV Mini could be this century’s VW, a populist answer for personal transportation.

The debut of the Mini Cooper Electric Concept is set for September 14.
