‘Scorpion’ Star Katharine McPhee Buys 1930’s Spanish Eclectic in Studio City

Anxious to leave behind her 1940’s home in Toluca Lake—which has seen a recent price reduction to $1.499 million—actress Katherine McPhee has made an investment in period charm with this early 1930’s Spanish eclectic in Studio City. McPhee paid $2.05 million for the property against a listing price of $2.08 million; the house had been on the market for about four months, and last changed hands in 2015, for $1.9 million.

The home’s façade features blazing white stucco and red tile roof, a second-floor balcony; the turret entrance is embellished with a semi-recessed gothic doorway, a potent statement to begin the home. But the interiors fall away to the softness more readily associated with Los Angeles-area Spanish-style houses from the era.

Refined rustic touches and period details lend a quiet dignity to the interiors. Period ceiling fixtures, raw wood ceilings, ornamental windows, built-ins, rounded arches, and a mix of tile and original, narrow-plank hardwood are expressions characteristic of the home; the composition is firmly grounded and centered by a magnificent stone fireplace in the living room. The kitchen is very representative of the house overall, overhauled in a Shaker-influenced manner that filters the rustic through a little restraint and circumspection: very simple, and quite beautiful.

The property’s outdoor living spaces include a grill station, dining area, and canopy pavilion with fireplace to extend the theme.

Following her finish on ‘American Idol,’ McPhee released a series of studio albums; the most recent was 2015’s ‘Hysteria.’ The singer/actress’s role as Paige on ‘Scorpion’ continues in the program’s upcoming fourth season, which will begin airing next month.
