About a month after buying into celebrity-friendly and pest-resistant 433 Greenwich in northwest Tribeca, actor and serial home-renovator Meg Ryan has sold an apartment in Soho. Ryan accepted an offer of $9.9 million for the unit in 84 Mercer, which she had listed with an asking price of $10.9 million. She bought into 433 Greenwich for $9.4 million so, well, that worked out.

The three-and-three apartment at 84 Mercer represents Ms. Ryan’s most recent finished renovation and revision project. The revision emphasizes contrast, using black and white to define and enrich, and present a fundamental interplay as the basis for the interiors. It’s been done frequently before, but perhaps not so thoughtfully as a response to and embellishment of existing architecture.

The 4,100 square-foot apartment features a long gallery flanked by exterior windows and a series of French doors with transom windows. Exposed plumbing gives the home a historical identity, and the use of French doors throughout the apartment might express a continual fluidity between past and present, as well as a continual invitational quality. The blend of period charm with the black and white execution avoids the plodding and stark result of a black-and-white scheme in a less broadly imaginative space.

Ryan’s purchase in 433 Greenwich may well become the actress’s next project. She made her directorial debut with 2015’s ambitiously literate ‘Ithaca,’ which she also starred in.
