With $6.5M Purchase, Natalie Portman Is Montecito’s Newest Resident

Natalie Portman’s new home in Montecito is quite extraordinary. The home is the work of Barton Meyers Associates, and features a singular and green design. Portman had to part with $6.5 million to call the house home, but what a nice property it is.

Situated on over ten acres in Montecito, the house rests amid rolling hills in the sparingly populated area. It measures 3,991 square feet, and contains four bedrooms and 4.5 baths.

The house is constructed green, using recycled steel and concrete as primary building materials. It features a very effective industrial aesthetic, giving an impression of airy space that comes as a refreshing change to more ponderous iterations of the industrial-influenced style.

The whole concept of the home hinges upon a set of garage door-like partitions that may be retracted for a wide-open and wildly optimistic meeting of interior and exterior spaces. Inside, the spatial layout is loft-like, though, and the doors are entirely paneled in glass, so an acute sense of liberation is present either way.

There’s a lot of glass, steel and poured concrete involved in the soaring common area, so much that the minimalist fireplace on one wall feels a little lost in all the space and hardness.  But the interiors, and the interior/exterior flow, are so charmingly iconoclastic, whether or not the fireplace seems like an atmospheric afterthought hardly seems relevant.

The ten-acre property incorporates a small pool, some very engineered landscaping, and plenty of room to breathe.

Oscar-winner Portman’s most recent screen appearance is in the new Terence Malick film, ‘Song to Song.’ Malick’s films, some of the most critically acclaimed movies ever made, number only ten in over forty years, although 2017 will see two new releases from the director.
