Volkswagen took to the Shanghai Auto Show to reveal its new completely electric, completely autonomous crossover utility vehicle, the I.D. Crozz. The new creation joins the German brand’s I.D. lineup and is built upon the MEB electric car platform it shares with Audi, Seat, and Skoda.

The I.D. Crozz joins the hatch-like I.D. and the campervan I.D. Buzz model in VW’s I.D. lineup. Volkswagen has called the I.D. Crozz a “concrete example of what might be seen in 2020.” 2020 is the same year the I.D. lineup is set to begin production.

The drivetrain consists of a pair of electric motors, one on each axle, in order to create all-wheel drive. The output will be 302 horsepower in this particular example, and top speed 112 mph. The concept model comes with a range of 311 miles.

Inside of the I.D. Crozz is a fully augmented-reality HUD, with no buttons at all and a steering wheel that is able to withdraw back into the dash when the CUV is in the I.D. Pilot autonomous mode.

The I.D. Crozz comes with a 150kW fast-charger that is able to deliver an 80-percent charge in 30 minutes. The 2020 projection for I.D. lineup production fits neatly with the explosion of quick-charging stations worldwide; globally, the number of quick charging stations operational by 2020 is expected to number nearly 200,000, up from just 1,800 in 2012.
