A one-time home of Marlene Dietrich has come up for sale. The property’s current owners are looking for $6.495 million to see the home into contract; it’s a little bit of a flip, as the home sold to its current owner last autumn, for a little less than $5.5 million.

The Spanish Revival dates to the early 1930’s, and measures 6,167 square feet of interior living space. It contains four bedrooms and four baths.

The property is packed with appealing details, inside and out. A front courtyard, an arcade porch, slate and tile distinguish the entry to the house; the courtyard is grounded and centered by a mature tree. Contrasting tones were used to accent the second-floor balcony, with green and blue used to balance out the terra-cotta tile and whitewash of the stucco exterior walls, and ornamental windows and lantern sconces add to the atmosphere.

Inside, rough-hewn timber, wrought-iron, and stained glass panels continue the period trend. Renovations have brought recessed lighting and an updated kitchen and baths. The family room sneaks a wet bar into an alcove, and the living room contains a marble fireplace at one end; the Saltillo tile of the living room extends to a sunroom.

The exterior of the property is quite beautiful. The pool, carved out of a series of hard angles, fits the exterior vision nicely, and a koi pond off the side deck is flanked by a romantic garden and set of stone steps. An outdoor fireplace in the Southwestern style is bordered by the landscaping of the half-acre lot.

Sultry-voiced star Dietrich occupied the home in the early 1940’s.
