At first glance, Kvadrat’s updates to Artek’s “Kiki” Collection might appear simple and unassuming. However, the new collection is the result of thoughtful brand pairing and offers bold and bright new styling.

Seen at Design Miami/Basel 2016, the updated collection came about as the result of a collaboration between Artek and Kvadrat. Both brands commissioned Berlin-based Keuhn Malvezzi Architects to develop the collection’s unique scheme.

Artek’s “Kiki” collection was first designed by Finnish artist Ilmari Tapiovaara back in 1960, and now Raf Simons for Kvadrat has upholstered the fine pieces in modern and contemporary fabrics. Particular attention has been paid to the variety of the stripe and its innate graphic boldness.

The blended wool textiles have been given life with influence from pop and contemporary art, music, fashion textiles, and modernist furniture. Observers will particularly notice the collection’s simple and chic designs juxtaposed against the new brightly colored fabrics and bold textures.

Since both Kvadrat and Artek are rooted in Nordic design tradition, the collaboration truly resulted in sleek, easy, and modern new pieces.
