Although car fans might not consider a semi-truck a luxury vehicle, they most definitely notice their presence on the road—and in the environment. According to the EPA, these large vehicles contribute to around 20 percent of the greenhouse gasses in the US transportation section since their fuel economy rates usually only range from 4 to 8 mpg.

BMW is trying to redefine the modern semi-truck with their all-electric 18-wheeler. It still has 40 tons of capacity, but now doesn’t release any carbon emissions at all into the atmosphere. The amazing material transport truck came into being from a partnership between BMW, German freight company Scherm Group and Dutch manufacturer Terberg. When completely charged the vehicle can travel 62 miles without emissions and will save 11.8 tons of CO2 each year.

The luxury vehicle company is dedicated to the development of sustainable vehicles, and the new semi-truck is the first to begin regular transport in Europe.
