Actor Matt Damon listed his Pacific Palisades estate this week with a $21 million asking price. Damon has owned the property since 2015, according to public records.

The Upper Riviera house is the work of L.A. architectural firm KAA Design Group. Its exterior architecture could certainly be called postmodern; there’s a great deal of Japanese inspiration in its thoughtful asymmetry and design flourishes, but the foundation is high modern. The roof is dominated by a trio of irregularly staggered planar wings that suggest Prairie style. Interestingly, it presents three distinct faces to the world—motor court, lawn and poolside—with each offering its own unique perspectives and massing; the lawn-ward side is perhaps the most overtly poetic, and certainly the most ambitious.

The planks of the wooden boardwalk in the foreground create a perpendicular effect with the front steps and assertive lines of the façade. The boardwalk, with the tightly groomed hedges and stone walls, also suggests harmonious interplay between man and nature. And, beyond the temple-like entrance, the interiors of the 13,500 square-footer bear out the sustained tension of this philosophical foundation.

While expectations might describe the interiors of this seven-bedroom house as entirely understated or austerely meditative, they’re quite expressive and very warm. There’s a great deal of high gloss hardwood—floors and, in some spots, ceilings too; the gem is the living room’s soaring ceiling, in hardwood and inset with clerestory windows, a remarkably liberating space.

A pool, koi pond, terrace and patio complex and teahouse fill out the nearly .7-acre lot.

Damon’s upcoming projects include The Last Duel, with Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck.
