Late last year, Martin Bregman, the renowned Hollywood producer whose credits include Scarface and Carlito’s Way, put his mansion-sized Park Avenue apartment up for sale. The original asking price was $9 million, which precipitously and quickly dropped to $7.9 million before the house was taken off the market altogether in June. Now, the four-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom abode is back on the market, with a hefty markup—to a cool $10 million.
According to marketing materials, the 4,000-square-foot apartment is “designed to showcase classical European style with a modern Manhattan sensibility.” A private elevator from the lobby rises directly to an elegant entrance gallery that extends to nearly 30 feet in length. The formal living room is decked out in parquet flooring, with a decorative fireplace set between oversized multi-pane sash windows. The expansive dining room comfortably seats a dozen diners, while the library envelops the reader with warm, carved wood paneling and offers a wet bar and movie projection system with a hidden screen that drops from the ceiling at the touch of a button. A butler’s pantry links the dining room to the eat-in kitchen, which boasts such features as custom, glass-fronted Shaker cabinets and state-of-the-art appliances, including a commercial-grade range. There’s a home office and a pair of en suite guest bedrooms, while the master suite truly lives up to its name: positioned at the rear of the apartment for maximum privacy, it features a second decorative fireplace and a canopied bed with a brazen mirrored ceiling, out of which drops a flat-screen television—like something after Tony Montana’s heart.
Bregman, who was nominated for an Oscar in 1976 for Dog Day Afternoon, was born and raised in New York City. His luxurious soon-to-be-former home is ensconced on a middle floor of a stately, limestone-faced 14-story apartment house designed by celebrated architect Emery Roth and constructed in 1917. It’s now surrounded by a sleek collection of glass-walled modernist office towers on Park Avenue. Amongst its other residents is Calvin Klein Women’s Creative Director Francisco Costa.
