This year marks a monumental milestone for Roger Dubuis, as the prestigious Swiss watchmaker celebrates its 30th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, Roger Dubuis has unveiled its most ambitious timepiece to date—the Excalibur Grande Complication. This limited-edition model exemplifies the brand’s dedication to horological artistry by combining three of haute horlogerie’s most revered complications into a single calibre.
At the heart of the Grande Complication lies the new RD118 movement, comprised of an astounding 684 components. Each facet of the calibre is meticulously hand-decorated to achieve the Poinçon de Genève seal, the highest certification of quality in watchmaking. Powering the watch is a 60-hour power reserve, allowing the perpetual calendar, minute repeater, and flying tourbillon to operate in harmony.
The perpetual calendar stands out as founder Roger Dubuis’ favorite complication. Its faultless mechanical memory can accurately display the date with no need for correction until 2100. The information is presented on a retrograde display—a mechanism Dubuis helped pioneer in the 1980s.
Another impressive feature is the minute repeater, which chimes the time upon activation. The three-tone “devil’s chord” chime provides an unconventional melody engineered for optimal acoustics. This innovative take on a historical complication echoes Dubuis’ unconventional spirit.
Finally, the flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock adds visual intrigue and precision by offsetting the effects of gravity on the movement. Its openworked titanium cage is a hallmark of Roger Dubuis design.
With only 8 pieces slated for production, the Excalibur Grande Complication represents a new pinnacle of technical and aesthetic prowess for Roger Dubuis. It pays homage to the brand’s founders and their tireless pursuit of emotive watchmaking. As a manufacture now leading haute horlogerie into the future, Roger Dubuis continues to make its mark on watchmaking history.
