The emperor of e-commerce has expanded his kingdom in Miami’s billionaire beachhead. Jeff Bezos recently acquired a $79 million mansion on exclusive Indian Creek Island, known as the “Billionaire Bunker” for its ultra-wealthy residents. Just two months prior, he purchased the property next door for $68 million.

With seven bedrooms and 14 bathrooms across 19,000 square feet, the palatial estate evokes a modern-day palace. Grounds include a pool, theater, library, and quarters for staff—everything one needs for 21st-century aristocratic living. Beyond the home lies a verdant 18-hole golf course, perfect for leisurely recreation when not helming a global retail empire.

For Bezos, this $147 million compound represents a homecoming of sorts. Though now the world’s second-richest person, he graduated from a local Miami high school in 1982, before amassing his $155 billion fortune. Now, he returns as a modern Midas who converts enterprises to gold, from online retail to cloud computing and even space tourism.

Indian Creek Island has long attracted the mega-rich with its privacy and security. Hidden behind a guarded gate, the man-made isle has its own mayor and police force for just 81 residents. Bezos now abides alongside star neighbors like Tom Brady, their yachts docked outside. Beyond material comforts, the bunker provides insulation from the masses whose lives are transformed by Amazon’s endless selection and delivery.

As with the fictional Gatsby, Bezos retreats behind tall gates where his residence becomes a beacon of boundless wealth and privilege. But outside the bunker surges an ever-churning society propelled by innovations that have made Bezos both prosperously removed yet pervasively influential.
