Joining and soon supplanting the best-selling XC90 SUV in Volvo’s lineup is the model’s electric progeny: the 2024 EX90. The venerable Swedish automaker introduced the new SUEV this fall, touting its sustainability profile, long range, aggressively next-gen Scandinavian looks, tech-ecosystem integration, phone key tech, onboard NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms, and 30-minute quick charge time from 10% of capacity to 80%.

And, of course, the model’s safety suite. Getting drivers and their passengers safely to their destination has always been at the top of Volvo’s design and marketing hierarchy, and the new EX90 features a broad complement of sensors — lidar, radar, cameras — to feed on-the-road data to a host of computers for adjustments, algorithm-driven eye gaze assessment, and ‘Pilot Assist’ supplemental help while underway, pulling over in the event that the driver falls unconscious or cannot continue to pilot the vehicle.

The EX90’s performance profile is impressive. The model will be available in two trim levels, with the top-dog AWD double-motor powertrain version — available exclusively at launch barring a future ‘launch edition’ variant — offering drivers 517 horsepower and 671 pound-feet of torque. The seven-seat family rig can travel up to 373 miles (WLTP) on a full charge.

The cabin experience is illuminated by a greenhouse roof and powered by Snapdragon and Unreal Engine. A 14.5-inch screen — one of two in the EX90 — controls infotainment, there is onboard 5G connectivity enhancing Google and Apple CarPlay, and the Atmos-equipped audio system is sourced from Bowers & Wilkins. The NVIDIA DRIVE AI package indicates that the new model is well prepped for autonomous driving, but Volvo isn’t discussing that just yet.

The 2024 EX90 starts around $80,000.
