Tears for Fears’ Roland Orzabal Seeking $4M for Hollywood Hills Home

With an ask of $3.95 million, a Hollywood Hills home appeared on the open market this fall courtesy of Tears for Fears co-founder Roland Orzabal. The singer-songwriter and fledgling novelist has owned the Nichols Canyon residence for decades; public records indicate he acquired it in 2000.

The 1960-built five-bedroom house’s exterior architecture is an alloy of modern and Mediterranean styles, and a street side impression is of a slightly clunky larger suburban fortress. However, the front door has been replaced with an ancient installation that adds dimension at entry, and inside the home very quickly develops as a remarkable residence with a living style that is warm, thoughtful and very smart. Unique touches that emerge on a tour of the shared spaces include the use of color, the architectural touches—for example the built-in shelving above the hall entry to the dining room—and the staircase, a graceful, sculptural installation with solid balustrades.

The heart of the 4,266 sq. ft. house is the great room, a breathtaking space liberated by a second-story ceiling — itself enhanced by a second-floor overlook with industrial balustrade — and the soaring assembly of oversized glass panes that serve as an exterior wall. The kitchen’s another gem, with a splendid warm-and-cool collision: upper cabinetry in what appears to be teak contrasted with lower cabinetry painted a creamy mint green and decorated with bronze-toned midcentury hardware.

The property’s outdoor recreation area is a secluded corner enhanced by tropical plantings. A pool and fire pit stand as the primary features.

Tears for Fears’ debut album, 1983’s The Hurting, was a chart-topper in their native UK. Their sophomore effort, 1985’s Songs from the Big Chair, with its timeless anthemic hits “Shout” and “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” would earn them a chart-topper stateside. The band’s most recent album, The Tipping Point, was released earlier this year after an 18-year hiatus; it was well received on both sides of the pond.
