A four-bedroom Malibu waterfront home with ownership associations of 1960s Hollywood royalty popped up on the open market recently with a $16.995 million ask. The property, once the beach house and quiet retreat of hotshot daredevil actor Steve McQueen, has 4,335 sq. ft. of interiors to commend it.

Located in the Victoria Point community, the residence rises three levels above the stone outcropping that represents its natural foundation. Its main entrance opens to the accommodations level, with a splendid hardwood staircase descending to the shared living area, which unfolds in classical Malibu style as an open, saline-tinged space with beach-casual overtones and a tiered layout: galley kitchen and dining area above, fireplace living room a few steps below. A large raised planter adds a bit of interior landscaping to the kitchen, while a large balcony overlooking the ocean is the space’s terminus, accessible through an optional glass wall and a glass door off the kitchen hallway.

The master bedroom is currently styled as Japanese-inspired, with a platform bed and a naturalistic touch that pops up throughout the second level: a back wall finished in slatted hardwood. The room’s architectural flourish is a series of decorative wall and ceiling beams, intersecting planes that sketch the space and enclose the fireplace, a raised hearth design with midcentury DNA. Pocketing glass opens the space generously to an ocean overlook balcony.

The King of Cool’s notable films include The Magnificent Seven (1960, with Yul Brynner and Charles Bronson), The Great Escape (1963), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Nevada Smith (1966), The Sand Pebbles (1966, with Candice Bergen), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968, with Faye Dunaway), Bullitt (1968), Le Mans (1971), The Getaway (1972), Papillon (1973, with Dustin Hoffman), and The Towering Inferno (1974, with Paul Newman, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, and O. J. Simpson). The latter grossed a whopping $204 million, making McQueen the world’s highest-paid movie star; he would hold that title for another four years despite not releasing any new films.
