The most exciting Mercedes-Benz alternative fuel concept car to emerge in years, the EQXX, is back in the automaker’s press files this spring.

The model was announced a few months ago as an indication of the company’s R&D muscle and its sensibilities moving deeper into the decade. Hyper-efficiency was the crux, with sustainability extending to material composition and thermal recycling. Mercedes stated that the concept would have a range of 620 miles; the model would use just 10 kWh per 100 kilometers.

A fresh look at the EQXX in the second quarter reveals a bump in the range, and one proven by real-world operation. As of the spring of 2022, this representative model of Merc’s next-phase lineup posted range of 626 miles, with about 87 more miles left in the batteries, according to the company, which just put the concept through testing in Western Europe. Total range, according to the little experiment, easily exceeds 700 miles.

The model used only 14 kWh per 100 miles during its jaunt from Sindelfingen, Germany, to Cassis, France; it began with a full charge, and did not stop to refuel. For reference, the Tesla Model S uses around 32 kWh per 100 miles.
