Motor Yacht A, the 309-foot boat owned by Russian billionaire Andrei Melnichenko, ran into a bit of misfortune last month. According to Forbes, the vessel was deregistered by authorities in the Isle of Man; the move was in line with U.K. sanctions levied against the former EuroChem executive.

The seacraft is one of two owned by Melnichenko; the other, a three-master, is naturally named Sailing Yacht A. Both were designed by noted French designer Philippe Starck. The two seagoing recreational vehicles came with a combined price tag of about a billion dollars. Like Motor Yacht A, Sailing Yacht A has been deregistered, dramatically limiting her movements. This means they won’t be able to obtain classification or insurance, without which they can’t enter any ports.

Melnichenko sought to distance himself from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine early on, and issued a statement to that effect: “The events in Ukraine are truly tragic. We urgently need peace. As Russian by nationality, Belarusian by birth, and Ukrainian by blood, I feel great pain and disbelief witnessing the brotherly peoples fighting and dying.”

Motor Yacht A was constructed by Blohm + Voss and launched in 2008. Her hull design is something of an inversion, and her amenities include three swimming pools. She is powered by a pair of MAN diesels which together produce over 12,000 horsepower, and she has a top speed of 23 knots.

Motor Yacht A’s two tenders, Open and Limo, were also designed by Philippe Starck. Starck, an industrial designer, has a portfolio that includes furniture and household fixtures, residential and commercial architecture, and eyeglass frames. One of his more interesting current projects is Maison Heler in Metz, France. The project, commissioned by Hilton Hotels, is a fantastical design that crowns a homogenous, roughly 12-level lower section with an idealized version of a traditional Alsatian house.

Melnichenko’s net worth is currently around $20 billion, if Forbes and Bloomberg are to be believed.
