A conveyance used in a blockbuster 1980s Dustin Hoffman vehicle is soon going under the gavel. The 1949 Buick Roadmaster ragtop was one of a pair used for the Rain Man shoot. Hoffman, who took home a Best Actor Academy Award for his role in the film, also took home the car.
The classic tourer is powered by a 320ci inline 8-cylinder that produces 150bhp, making it a powerful car for its day. It was restored by Larry Payne, a former professional race car driver who is now a custom builder.
Hoffman’s ownership tenure relegated the Roadmaster to careful storage in keeping with its rarity and historical importance. It is being auctioned by Bonhams, at the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the 27th of this month. It is expected to sell for between $150K and $250K.
