Yamaha recently revealed the MT-10 SP superbike, a dark rider with a bit of glam and a lot of power. To close out 2021, Yamaha introduced the 2022 XSR900. In its newest iteration, the café model features similar accent toning that hints at both nostalgia and contemporary attitudes.

In keeping with the model’s respect for earlier eras, the 2022 XSR900 is inspired in part by 1980s designs. Yamaha calls it Faster Sons; of course, in referencing a son one also references the father, and the shadow of the elder is indicated in the design. But both generations will appreciate the quick-shift feature and standard cruise.

For the new model year, the bike also receives a larger version of the three-cylinder CP3 engine: it displaces 890cc, and produces about 120 horsepower and nearly 70 pound-feet of torque. The updated CP3 engine peaks at 7,000 rpm.

The XSR900’s new subframe is a dedicated design, and the model’s wheelbase has been extended over an inch by virtue of a longer swingarm. The bike borrows the MT-09’s Brembo brakes, though, and the 3.5-inch TFT screen as well.

The 2022 Yamaha XSR900 is priced from $9,999, and expected in dealerships in the spring.
