Berkshire Hathaway vice chair Charlie Munger purchased a home in Montecito in early December. The 4,657 sq. ft. house changed hands for $11 million; it last sold in November of 2020, when it fetched $7.3 million. Its now-previous owner updated it in the interim.

The property is about 700 feet from the beach. Its interior design establishes a living style that is refined but very relaxed; the reclaimed ceiling beams may well be purely cosmetic, but they add a rusticity, and a touch of the historical, that sells the four-bedroom house as a beachside elder. Bedroom ceilings are frequently dramatically hipped, and feature exposed trussing.

Casement windows, steel-framed doors — including a pocketing installation that opens the shared spaces to the outdoor living area — and matte-finished hardwood floors are also part and parcel of the design style. Particularly impressive is the living room fireplace accent wall; it is tile, not figured and/or bookmatched stone, a refreshing change from the conspicuous norm for a house of this price class. The kitchen is a gem, and features a galley scullery with a double sink and prep area for catering.

There are multiple balconies and verandas in the home’s eccentric exterior architecture, and in back the second-level outdoor spaces overlook the community’s tennis court and other amenities.

Munger’s net worth is estimated by Forbes at $2.4 billion.
