Usonian-Style Frank Lloyd Wright in Michigan Selling for $445K

This Frank Lloyd Wright-designed single family home in Michigan appeared on the open market this month with an asking price of $445,000. But you have to be quick if you want to pick up one of these relative bargains these days; the name recognition and appeal of the architectural significance of such a property makes it a quick sale, and the 1949-built home moved into pending status within a few days of listing.

The Usonian home in Kalamazoo is known as the McCartney House, and it apparently had been owned by a McCartney family member when it originally popped up for sale in 2019. It was sensitively renovated prior to its initial listing; as it now stands, the geometric preoccupations of its overall design — check out the roofline for a preview — are now well-matched by interiors dressed up with the wood and striking earth tones preferred by Wright himself. The home was a Usonian Automatic, and sports those unique mail-order blocks throughout its 1,700 sq. ft. of living space.

Other Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian homes include the Theodore and Bette Pappas House in Missouri, the James B. Christie House in New Jersey, and the Toufic H. Kalil House in New Hampshire; the latter two are Usonian Automatics, early mail-order homes, like the McCartney House.
