A vehicle with a rooftop and/or hood-top solar array has been a primary dream of the green-minded driver for decades. Making the cruelty of pump prices and the anxiety of EV range a thing of the past would mean big sales. Not only that, but since solar is a true zero-emissions fuel source, the model would be absolutely non-polluting (battery production excluded).

EdisonFuture, a division of SPI Energy, may have the near future of the workhorse daily driver sewn up. The models in the company’s electric pickup lineup will be outfitted with a retractable solar panel on the roof, which can recharge on the go. The announcement comes as a teaser ahead of the company’s reveal of its EF1-T prototype at the Los Angeles Auto Show this month.

The EF1-T will be available in three configurations, with one, two and three motors distinguishing each. The single-motor version gives drivers 470 horsepower to play with; the top-tier doubles down. The model will also be offered in a van body style, which is naturally called the EF1-V.

The company will reveal more about the EFT vehicles at the LA Show. Stay tuned.
