BMW resurrected the i Vision concept series this fall with a new take on sustainability—one that’s impressively comprehensive.

The i Vision series have always been daring, and the i Vision Circular. Now, the circle suggests regeneration, and that’s exactly what BMW has in mind, from powertrain outward. The i Vision Circular is manufactured from what is recycled and can be recycled in turn.

Along the way, adhesives are avoided to facilitate part exchange and repurposing, so the Circular’s conception involves keeping the design simple—easy to construct, and easy to deconstruct—via fewer components that are connected in a variety of innovative ways, including a nifty quick-on, quick-off fastener the press release calls ‘Joyful Fusion’ that needs only a unique wrench for in-a-snap tightening and loosening. Surface finishes follow in kind.

But for its conspicuously daring angularity, the Circular’s exterior form resembles the i3, and it’s certainly envisioned as an urban getabout and daily commuter—albeit one for 2040, not 2022. Its roof is unusually high, deriving from the expectation that autonomous conveyances will be mobile lounges by the middle of the century.
