It was only a few months ago that tech mogul Eric Schmidt shelled out over $60 million for a sizable estate in Bel-Air; one of the storied neighborhood’s most lavish, and one that was formerly owned by billionaire hotelier Barron Hilton. The property includes 13 bedrooms in its 2.55 acres, as well as a tennis court, a pool with a design that makes it one of the most famous in Los Angeles, and a koi pond.

That’s one way to spend some of the bounty earned while serving as the head honcho of tech leviathan Google, Inc. Here’s another, on another coast, although it came at the more conservative price of $27.5 million: a penthouse condo in a particularly flashy downtown neighborhood of Manhattan.

The Noho property is located in a loft building that went up, in the mid-2000s, amid aristocratically historic brethren. The duplex unit is beautifully designed; the floating staircase alone is worth a look, as it would be right at home in MoMA as a transitional contrivance. Other treats include the living room centerpiece: a beautifully ponderous fireplace with a massive marble surround, mantel and raised hearth, one of four wood-burners in the unit. The 6,350 sq. ft. of interiors is augmented with the unit’s outdoor space: a 550-sq. ft. terrace accessible via floor-to-ceiling sliding glass.

Schmidt’s other notable residential acquisitions of the last couple of years include a large estate in Montecito, which he closed on in September of last year for $30.8 million.

Schmidt’s net worth is north of $23 billion, according to Forbes.
