For next year, South Korean automaker Genesis will have another SUV in dealerships. The company that brought the GV80 to the marketplace—that particular full-size SUV model has done very well against the uptown competition—is entering a sportier mid-size model in the battle with the big German brands.

Genesis arrived with design language that echoed Bentley’s, and gradually began to evolve into a distinct style that drew accolades; when combined with a reputation for reliability, the brand become wholly distinct as a market presence, an enfant terrible that increasingly troubles trouble high-end brands. But before the upcoming model year, the luxury division of Hyundai had just one SUV model in its lineup—the $50K GV80.

In its brevity of shape, the GV70 arrives as a more attractive option; slotting nearer to crossover than SUV, it’s not as visually extravagant as its larger sibling, and looks sportier. Genesis is keeping its engine options simple, though, and the standard 2.5L turbo four-cylinder that comes standard in the GV80, and the 3.5L biturbo V6 that is its upsell, power the GV70.

As the GV80 is the larger, plusher model, the GV70 is designed to offer considerable performance along with a cushy interior. The crossover’s modes include Sport, which can be augmented with Sport Plus with an optional package; the cabin boasts a driver assistance suite that includes lane change assist and adaptive cruise control.

Genesis hasn’t revealed the GV70 pricing structure at this point.
