University of Phoenix scion Peter Sperling hefted two substantial properties onto the market in the high summer of 2019. One was a 1900-built villa in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood, which hit the market at $13.8 million last year; interestingly, that house was commissioned to be built by Robert Louis Stevenson’s widow.

The other was this period Spanish-style which was, at one time, the home of Vincent Price, and which has fared better on the market: it recently found a new buyer. It was priced at $21 million when it appeared last year, but sold to its new owner this month for $16.5 million.

The hacienda is designed around a courtyard that features a water feature centerpiece, a loggia, and a thick border of mature trees; a tennis court, a pool and cabana, a pavilion, a basketball court, and gardens and lawns are also featured in the 1.7-acre lot.

The interiors of the house are extravagant, with the great room presenting breathtaking scale, original hardwood and wrought iron, a main staircase, and an expressive arch over a transitional partial staircase. The living room is similarly designed, with exposed ceiling trusses and a carved stone fireplace. Throughout the home, French doors open to the lavishly green property exterior.

Amenities include a screening room—with what appears to be a set of 35mm projectors—as well as a master bedroom with a barrel ceiling, a library, a lounge with a bar, a wine cellar, a studio, and staff accommodations.

Sperling’s net worth is north of $1 billion.
