2021 Porsche 911 Turbo Slots Below Turbo S, But It’s No Less Impressive

Back in March, Porsche let us have a look at the top-tier 911 for 2021: the Turbo S. The halo model made a splash even without the cancelled Geneva Auto Show that was to be its usher, with an eight-speed PDK tweaked for a turbocharged drivetrain. This helped the 3.8L six-cylinder engine deliver 640 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque; the resulting 2.6-second 0-60 time was news to the ears of the envelope-pushers and dreamers waiting for the reveal.

After a judicious time period comes the next variant, the 911 Turbo. This time around, the six-cylinder engine delivers 572 horsepower, and 553 pound-feet of torque. The quickness of both the coupe and cabriolet, however, is diminished only negligibly; the coupe loses a tenth of a second to the Turbo S, the cabriolet two-tenths of a second. Of course, 0-60 times are an oversimplified benchmark for performance car evaluation, but the fact is still striking, especially in light of the nearly 20% savings on the sticker price.

Porsche’s PASM system—Porsche Active Suspension Management—is standard on the Turbo, as it is on the Turbo S; likewise the Sport Chrono Package. A track-oriented option is available for the Turbo, which lightens the car (mainly by removing the back seats); high-performance Sport options are also available, including a free-flowing exhaust system. And numerous driver-assist tech features may be ordered.

Prices for the 2021 911 Turbo start at $172K, quite a bit below the Turbo S’s $204K price tag. Deliveries are expected in the first months of next year.
