Actor and writer Rainn Wilson listed his home west of Los Angeles this summer for $1.7 million; he’s owned the property in Agoura Hills for about fifteen years. More than enough time to adjust it to taste, or presumably conduct a deep character study and ponder the philosophical mystery and profound relationship between man and beta vulgaris.

The 1981-built home’s spirit is unusually literate. As the property exterior is fundamentally utilitarian—this is a small hobbyist farm for those who like a little honest dirt under their fingernails weekends—the interiors are strikingly expressive without delving into kitsch or boho effusion. The living spaces are remarkably understated, so when the dashes of surprise do appear—the pendant fixture in the foyer, the kitchen backsplash—they really make an impact.

The house also features a layout designed for the restless. The many spaces include rooms dedicated to reading and music, and there is a studio in the home as well as a creative workspace. There are three bedrooms, including a suite with a patio. Materials include oak and pine floors, wood-framed windows and doors, and—in the case of the detached studio—reclaimed barn wood.

The lot measures in at about sixth-tenths of an acre, and fits in a passel of mature trees, as well as terrace and deck space. It also contains lodging for quadrupeds of all kinds—including equestrian facilities: a barn and tack room, and storage space for hay.

Wilson Portrayed oddball paper salesman Dwight Schrute to roaring acclaim on the hit television show The Office. He is Lex Luthor’s voice these days, among other engagements.
