Gesner’s Striking ‘Ravenseye’ on the Market in Malibu for $14M

A modern sporting the Gothic arch and flying buttress as motifs? Harry Gesner’s Ravenseye incorporates the shape and the structural innovation, and as a result conflates time through this house’s architecture, placing the medieval cathedral and the midcentury style in the same historical moment.

If that isn’t postmodernism, I don’t know what is, and Gesner might just agree. He designed the home in the late 1990s; it was completed in 1997. Entering the home is a solemn act, as ingress is achieved via a striking recessed entrance inset with a pair of Gothic arches.

Its step-down cathedral-like great room is its masterpiece, featuring a soaring glass wall inset with, yes, Gothic arches, and a cathedral ceiling. A brick accent wall inset with a fireplace, and slate floor and steps complete this stunning evocation of liberation, with views from the hilltop location taking in the surrounding Malibu countryside and ocean.

The house spans 4,120 square feet. It’s a three-and-three, with a master suite that presents a thematic reprise of that central window. The kitchen is a delight; style through the functional, harkening back to the 1970s for inspiration, with a glossy pine plank ceiling, slate floor, and white subway tile backsplash. The lot extends to an acre, with a swimming pool, and a deck overlooking the hills and ocean.

Ravenseye is listed with an asking price of $14 million.
