Last December, prolific novelist Dean Koontz purchased a whopper of a holiday gift for himself and his family: a nearly 13,500-square-foot contemporary hacienda dating to 2009. The house was remarkable for its grounds, which were, at the time of Mr. Koontz’s purchase, landscaped with an intensely romantic sensibility, as well as its varied design elements and the warmth of its interiors.

The imaginative writer apparently appreciates the style, because six months after spending $11.6 million on that particular bit of residential escapism, he’s purchased another estate designed with similar sensibilities. The latest purchase—in Irvine—was registered at $10.475 million.

The new home falls more in the territory of contemporary Tuscan style. It was built in 2008, and features an exterior strongly expressed as period: tile roof, wrought iron accents, varied window shapes, and an arched double-door entry. It is situated within the Shady Canyon community.

Within, the seven-bedroom, nine-bath home is more contemporary in spirit. In its 12,000 square feet you’ll spot sculpted and ornamental ceilings, oak parquet and inlaid marble tile floors, recessed lighting, a bit of LED backlighting for atmosphere, and a variety of amenities including a wet bar, an indoor pool, a home office, a sauna, a wine cellar, a home theater, a games room, and a gym.

The property is situated on the golf course, and overlooks the sixth fairway. A pool, a fireplace and outdoor lounge, and BBQ grill station complete the active, recreation-oriented exterior living style.
